Taormina Film Fest

67th edition

Taormina, from June 27th to July 3rd 2021

The official poster of the 67th edition of the Taormina Film Fest is a tribute to #Cinema and to Fred Zinnemann’s From Here to Eternity. A modern, bright and sunny reinterpretation of the iconic image of the 8 Oscar-winning film and its two great stars, Deborah Kerr e Burt Lancaster, tight in an unforgettable embrace.

Produced and organized by Videobank SPA

Artistic Directors: Francesco Alò (Il Messaggero, BadTaste.it), Alessandra De Luca (Avvenire, Ciak) and Federico Pontiggia (La Rivista del Cinematografo, Il Fatto Quotidiano, Movie Mag).

President of the Jury: the director Susanna Nicchiarelli.
After declaring herself “happy and honored”, she added: “it will be a festival to celebrate the bright future of cinema, we will see works by new directors, we will enjoy the beauty of being spectators”.

The Taormina Film Fest celebrates the return to the magic of cinema. Comedy, drama, family, horror, dystopia, black Woodstock and great stories of women at the 67th edition, from June 27 to July 3.
An edition of rebirth and restart, in which the six films in competition and the seven national and international premieres will alternate with exhibitions, meetings, an exciting anniversary, a historic restoration and the expected protagonists in the enchanting setting of the Ancient Theater.

This year the Taormina Film Fest 67 will live simultaneously in the suggestive Ancient Theater and in Sicilian movie theaters/cinemas, where some of the films and gala evenings will be screened live, including the opening and closing ceremonies.

TAOBUK

Taormina Book Festival – 11th edition “The Metamorphosis”

Taormina, 17-21 June 2021

www.youtube.com/watch?v=s9ZzV8-TitU

The fascinations of literature combined with the beauty of a unique place in the world. It is the perfect combination of Taobuk, an international literary festival that brings together the tradition of Taormina as the cosmopolitan capital of literature and arts, a refuge for eccentric and excellent personalities such as Tennessee Williams, Truman Capote, Picasso, Richard Strauss.

The Festival is conceived and directed by Antonella Ferrara.

Every year Taobuk chooses a theme around which the calendar of meetings takes shape with the help of authoritative writers, thinkers and artists, in a tight flow of ideas and novelties.

At the core of the festival there is literature seen through the point of view of international writers. Taobuk’s program, however, is also embellished with exhibitions, theatrical performances, dance pieces and film retrospectives shown in evocative locations: first and foremost the Ancient Theatre, along with the city’s palaces and major hotels.

This year’s theme is “The metamorphosis – everything changes”

Here is the 2021 programme www.taobuk.it/edizione-2021
Seat reservation at the events is free and compulsory

To reserve a free seat at the opening gala of Saturday 19, please click HERE

“La biblioteca araba ed altre scritture”

Palazzo Ciampoli, 10-25 June 2021

Opening hours: 10.00am -8.00pm

La biblioteca siculo araba e altre scritture

Within the Taormina Book Festival 2021, and in collaboration with Fondazioni Orestiadi, Palazzo Ciampoli will host the exhibition “La biblioteca araba ed altre scritture”.

The exhibition itinerary will alternate 19 works by great international artists: a journey, albeit slight, in the relationship between image and writing.

Artists: Stalker-De Luca, Alighiero Boetti, Emilio Isgrò, Carla Accardi, Hakim Abbaci, Ascanio Renda, Nja Mahdaoui, Rachid Koraichi, Giusto Sucato, Alfonso Leto, Emilio Angelini, Alfredo Romano, Mimmo Paladino, Khaled Ben Slimane, Jonida Xherri, Giovanni Bosco, Elisa Nicolaci.

Palazzo Ciampoli was a stately residence in Catalan style. The coat of arms above the entrance door shows the date 1412, the year of its construction. Ciampoli was the name of the family that owned the palace, until it was purchased by the Sicilian Region. The palace is located in the heart of the medieval village of Taormina, which initially stretched from the Clock Tower to Catania Gate.

Ancient Theatre, Sunday 20th September 2020 @ 9.30 pm

Tonight the Fondazione Taormina Arte and the Symphonic Orchestra of the Teatro Massimo Bellini of Catania present a sympnhonic concert with musics of Georg Gershwin and Maurice Ravel

PROGRAMME

George Gershwin

* An American in Paris

An American in Paris is a jazz-influenced orchestral piece first performed in 1928. It was inspired by the time that Gershwin had spent in Paris and evokes the sights and energy of the French capital in the 1920s.
(source: Wikipedia)

* Cuban Ouverture

Cuban Overture is a symphonic overture or tone poem for orchestra. Originally titled Rumba, it was a result of a two-week holiday which Gershwin took in Havana, Cuba in February 1932. Gershwin composed the piece in July and August 1932. The overture is dominated by Caribbean rhythms and Cuban native percussion, with a wide spectrum of instrumental color and technique.

Maurice Ravel

* Bolero

Boléro is a one-movement orchestral piece by the French composer Maurice Ravel (1875–1937). Originally composed as a ballet commissioned by Russian actress and dancer Ida Rubinstein, the piece, which premiered in 1928, is Ravel’s most famous musical composition.
For a number of reasons he then changed his mind again and decided to write a completely new piece based on the musical form and Spanish dance called bolero.

Cavalleria Rusticana (Rustican Chivalry)

an opera by Pietro Mascagni

Ancient Theatre, Monday 7th September 2020 @ 9.00 pm

(note: the date of September 8th is CANCELLED)

Cavalleria Rusticana is an opera in one act by Pietro Mascagni (1863-1945) to an Italian libretto by Giovanni Targioni-Tozzetti and Guido Menasci, adapted from a play written by Giovanni Verga based on his short story. It is the first and best known Mascagni’s works. Its success has been phenomenal from its first performance in the Teatro Costanzi in Rome on May 17, 1890 until the present day. At the time of Mascagni’s death in 1945, the opera had been performed more than 14,000 times in Italy alone.

“The Teatro Illustrato invites young Italian musicians to participate in a new competition for a one-act opera.” In 1888, the publisher Sonzogno launched its second competition for young Italian composers. The winner was Pietro Mascagni with Cavalleria Rusticana, and so it was that this story of an honour killing in a Sicilian village in the late nineteenth century, from a short story of the same name by Verga, entered the operatic canon. Owing to the intense dramatic power of the score and libretto, the opera quickly became recognised as a manifesto of Italian verism.

Il Volo

“Best of 10 Years”

Ancient Theatre, Saturday 5th September 2021 @9.00pm

– “Note: The concert was initially scheduled for August 8th 2020 and was postponed due to covid-19. Tickets already purchased remain valid for the new date” –

The concert celebrates 10 years of incredible music.

Making global pop-opera sensation Il Volo performs again at the Ancient Greek-Roman Theatre of  Taormina.

l Volo is a group of three (unconventional) teenage boys that came to fame in Italy after appearing on the Italian talent show “Ti Lascio Una Canzone”.
They were promptly snapped up by the leading people in the music industry in Italy and their debut album quickly went platinum. Like Andrea Bocelli before them, they are Italians set for the international stage. Their appearance on American Idol in 2011 caused a frenzy of first week sales for the lads with further plans to launch themselves elsewhere in the world. Their appeal is definitely their quirky image coupled with their unexpectedly mature vocals. They cover old ground in the classical crossover sphere, but they certainly package it in a new and exciting way. With undeniably strong voices and impeccable charm, Il Volo are hard to resist.
(source: classical-crossover.co.uk)

The three singers are tenors Piero Barone (born 1993) and Ignazio Boschetto (born 1994), and baritone Gianluca Ginoble (born 1995).
