Roberto Bolle and the most talented dancers of the American Ballet of New York will perform in the outstanding frame of the ancient Greek Theatre of Taormina.

Roberto Bolle trained at La Scala Ballet School where he entered at the age of 11. Rudolf Nureyev was the first to notice his talent and he chose Roberto to interpret Tadzio in the ballet Death in Venice. In 1996, just two years after he joined the Theatre Company as a member of the corps Roberto was promoted to Principal. His brilliant carrier took off immediately following his entry into the company along with invites to the most important theatres in the world. The attention Roberto has received from the Media and his presence as guest star at the greatest international events has made him a unique example of a star and a world-class dancer. For the 2009 Spring Season at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York, he performed as a Principal Dancer with the American Ballet Theatre: it was the first time that a male Italian dancer had joined the Company as a Principal. Luisa Kuliok, the Argentine actress who moved Italy as protagonist of the Woman of Mystery, returns to Taormina. On July 21,
The String of Pearls is a monologue by Helena Tritek, a theatrical journey of epic tones that through poems, stories, philosophy and ancient fables confronts the themes of life, love, war, starting with the strong message of dialogue among religions.
The Italian versin is adapted and directed by Piero Nicosia. On stage the versatile actress becomes different characters. The live music, written by master Giallanza, is performed by Calogero Giallanza (flute), Augusta Giraldi (harp) Paolo Rossetti (percussion).

SYNOPSIS
The story is set in London in the year 1785. The plot concerns the strange disappearance of a sailor named Lieutenant Thornhill, last seen entering Sweeney Todd’s establishment on Fleet Street. Thornhill was bearing a gift of a string of pearls to a girl named Johanna Oakley on behalf of her missing lover, Mark Ingestrie, who is presumed lost at sea. One of Thornhill’s seafaring friends, Colonel Jeffrey, is alerted to the disappearance of Thornhill by his faithful dog, Hector, and investigates his whereabouts. He is joined by Johanna, who wants to know what happened to Mark.
Johanna’s suspicions of Sweeney Todd’s involvement lead her to the desperate and dangerous expedient of dressing up as a boy and entering Todd’s employment, after his last assistant, Tobias Ragg, has been incarcerated in a madhouse. Eventually, the full grisly horror of Todd’s activities is uncovered when the dismembered remains of hundreds of his victims are discovered in the crypt underneath St. Dunstan’s church. Meanwhile, Mark, who has been imprisoned in the cellars beneath the pie shop and put to work as the cook, escapes via the lift used to bring the pies up from the cellar into the pie-shop. Here he makes the following startling announcement to the customers of that establishment:

    “Ladies and gentlemen – I fear that what I am going to say will spoil your appetites; but the truth is beautiful at all times, and I have to state that Mrs. Lovett’s pies are made of human flesh!”

Mrs. Lovett is then poisoned by Sweeney Todd who is, himself, apprehended and hanged. Johanna marries Mark and lives happily ever after.

“Le Macchine di Leonardo”, the world’s biggest (PRIVATE) collection of Leonardo da Vinci machines is born following the juvenile passion of Carlo (born on 25th February 1936), the founder of the Niccolai family and company.
Particularly skilled craftsmen, the members of the Niccolai family have so far developed 150 different models, based on the Da Vinci codes and on historical documents using the materials of Leonardo’s time: wood, metal, ropes and fabrics.
According to the unwritten rules of Florentine craftsmen, Carlo Niccolai has passed on his passion to his sons and grandsons, who, thanks to their knowledge of new technologies have enriched the collection with new models and organised more than a hundred exhibitions all over the world in the last ten years.

Mark Freuder Knopfler, OBE (born 12 August 1949) is a British guitarist, singer, songwriter, record producer and film score composer. He is best known as the lead guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter for the British rock band Dire Straits, which he co-founded in 1977. After Dire Straits disbanded in 1995, Knopfler went on to record and produce seven solo albums, including Golden Heart (1996), Sailing to Philadelphia (2000), and Get Lucky (2009). He has composed and produced film scores for eight films, including Local Hero (1983), Cal (1984), The Princess Bride (1987), and Wag the Dog (1997).
Knopfler is one of the most respected fingerstyle guitarists of the modern rock era, and was ranked 27th on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. Knopfler and Dire Straits have sold in excess of 120 million albums to date. A four-time Grammy Award winner, Knopfler is the recipient of the Edison Award and the Steiger Award, and holds three honorary doctorate degrees in music from universities in the United Kingdom.

 

 

 

 Rigoletto

This year is the bicentenary anniversary of the birth of Giuseppe Verdi and Taormina wants to celebrate this great artist by performing one of his best known works: Rigoletto

Rigoletto is an opera in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi. The Italian libretto was written by Francesco Maria Piave based on the play Le roi s’amuse by Victor Hugo. It was first performed at La Fenice in Venice on 11 March 1851. The story is set in Mantua (north Italy) in the Sixteenth century.

Synopsis

Act One
The Duke is boasting to his courtiers about his conquests and leads the latest, Countess Ceprano, to a private chamber whilst his hunchbacked jester, Rigoletto makes fun of her husband. Marullo announces the suspicions around Rigoletto having a mistress and Count Ceprano conspires with the courtiers to punish Rigoletto. Monterone enters to condemn the Duke for having seduced his daughter, but he is placed under arrest and scorned by Rigoletto. He utters a curse on both Rigoletto and the Duke. At home Rigoletto is greeted by his daughter, Gilda, whom he keeps hidden away. He reminisces about his late wife and demands Giovanna, the governess, to admit noone into the house; he has been frightened by Monterone’s curse. When Rigoletto has left, the Duke slips into their garden and silences Giovanna with money. He tells Gilda he is a poor student called Gualtier Maldè and that he is in love with her, rushing away when he hears approaching footsteps. Rigoletto is stopped by the courtiers outside his house who ask him to help abduct Countess Ceprano. He is fooled into wearing a blindfold and holding a ladder against his own wall whilst the courtiers break into his home and kidnap Gilda instead.

Act Two
The Duke is deeply upset about Gilda’s disappearance and rushes to see her when the courtiers inform him it was they who took her. Rigoletto enters looking for Gilda; the courtiers are shocked to hear she is actually his daughter and not his mistress as they had thought. Rigoletto condemns them and embraces Gilda. Monterone is sent to the dungeon and Rigoletto vows to avenge both Monterone and the Duke.

Act Three
Outside Sparafucile’s place Rigoletto and Gilda watch the Duke flirt with Sparafucile’s sister, Maddalena. Rigoletto sends his daughter off to disguise herself as a boy for her escape and then pays Sparafucile to kill the Duke. Gilda returns and hears Maddalena persuade her brother to kill not the Duke but the first person who walks into his inn. Despite his betrayal, Gilda sacrifices herself for the Duke and enters the inn. Rigoletto claims the body in a sack and gloats only to hear the Duke in the distance. Anxiously he cuts the sack open and finds Gilda who dies asking for his forgiveness.
