ABOUT THE INTERNATIONAL JAZZ DAY – #jazzday

In November 2011, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) officially designated April 30 as International Jazz Day in order to highlight jazz and its diplomatic role of uniting people in all corners of the globe.
International Jazz Day brings together communities, schools, artists, historians, academics, and jazz enthusiasts all over the world to celebrate and learn about jazz and its roots, future and impact; raise awareness of the need for intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding; and reinforce international cooperation and communication. Each year on April 30, this international art form is recognized for promoting peace, dialogue among cultures, diversity, and respect for human rights and human dignity; eradicating discrimination; promoting freedom of expression; fostering gender equality; and reinforcing the role of youth in enacting social change.

Candlelight tour of Taormina

National Day of Energy Saving – M’illumino Di Meno (I Use Less Energy)

Taormina, Friday February 23@ 6.00pm

Experience the beauty of Taormina in an unusual way: a candlelight walk through the historic centre and a night visit of the Ancient Theatre.

In fact, on the occasion of the National Day of Energy Saving, the Association ‘Legambiente Taormina / Valle dell’Alcantara’ organises a candlelight walk through the historic centre of Taormina, from Porta Catania down to the Ancient Teathre.

The walk is free and open to all, just bring a candle or a solar torch as most of the public illumination will be switched off from 6.30pm to 8.30pm and the windows of many stores will be lit only by candles.

Gather at Porta Catania at 6.15pm of Friday 23rd February  The walk will begin at 6.30pm and will end with the visit of the Ancient Theatre.

From Radio 2 Caterpillar Press Release:

“Since 2005, every year, a broadcast of Radio2, Caterpillar, asks its listeners to turn off all the lights that are not really indispensable at 6 pm on a February afternoon. This year it will be Friday, 23. We celebrate the birthday of the Kyoto Protocol, humanity’s attempt to save the Earth from the destruction caused by climate change. A symbolic and concrete initiative – extinguishing the lights and bearing witness to the future of humanity – which immediately became very participatory: the Italian squares, the monuments – the Tower of Pisa, the Colosseum, the Arena of Verona -, the palaces symbol of Italy – Quirinale, Senato and Camera – and many houses of citizens. The Eiffel Tower, the Foreign Office and the Vienna Prater Wheel went off for M’illumino di Meno. In dozens of museums we organize guided tours at low light, in schools we discuss energy efficiency, in many restaurants you can have dinner by candlelight, in the square you make astronomical observation taking advantage of the reduction of light pollution. Since the beginning of M’illumino di Meno, in 14 years, the world has changed. Energy efficiency has become a major economic issue and the incandescent bulbs that Caterpillar was inviting to change with energy-saving lamps now simply no longer exist. Many Italians have photovoltaic panels on their roofs and all the governments of the world have made other agreements, in Paris in 2015, to reduce the damage caused by climate change. All less one. M’illumino di Meno has also become the festival of sustainable lifestyles, those that make you feel good without consuming the planet. There was little that became state law: two proposals, in the House and the Senate, have called for the establishment of the National Day of energy conservation and sustainable lifestyles. This year, Caterpillar and Radio2 dedicate M’illumino di Meno to the beauty of walking and walking. Because under our feet there is the Earth and to save it we must change step. The invitation for February 23, 2018 is to turn off the lights and go on foot: a march, a procession, a snowshoeing, a relay race, a marathon or a half marathon, a dance in the square or a piece of road behind the band country. For schools the Pedibus – go all together on foot – for those who go by car to do a piece on foot. You can do it on foot. For one day, February 23, 2018, we think with our feet.”
